Joy Valdez
Accredited Simply Music Teacher
A pastor's wife currently leading music in her church and accredited Simply Music teacher, Joy's desire is to teach music in a way that encourages imagination and gets students playing quickly for others.
Joy begin taking traditional piano lessons at the age of 14 with an excellent piano teacher who realized Joy's desire for immediate satisfaction through learning to play entire relevant songs quickly. However, the teacher moved soon thereafter and she changed to another teacher. Although Joy expressed her desire to learn chords, the teacher did not provide this (more than likely, because she was not confident in her own ability in this area). Eventually, she approached her parents and told them she did not want them to waste their money on something she was not benefitting from So she discontinued lessons, but continued practicing what she had learned, working up new songs on occasion to sing at church, and learning anything that anyone would teach her.
At the age of 26, Joy became part of a band which ministered to the youth in her church. She sang solos and harmony and eventually played keyboard and bass. It was there that she learned how to play chords and accompany others who were singing. This would be an ever-growing process as each period in her life brought her to the next level in playing.
In 1996, Joy's husband was called to be Pastor of an Hispanic church in Dallas. Soon thereafter, Joy became the church pianist, playing hymns and praise songs for the next 5 1/2 years. Again in 2005, she took on the position of church pianist and currently is playing as well as leading worship and directing her two children who accompany her on bass and drum each Sunday.
Music is a vital part of Joy's life and it is her desire to bring that passion to students who are looking to make music their lifelong companion.
